Scripture Union Daily Guide 19th August 2025 Today’s Devotional

Topic: When Tragedy Strike
Opening Prayer
May my heart, O Lord, be receptive to your word as I meditate on it.

INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK OF JOB
Some preachers in our day often argue that if a man has faith and so pleases God, he will be wealthy and healthy. In Christ, they say, the curses of poverty and sickness have been taken away. In the book of Job, Satan argued that men serve God for what they can get out of it. Therefore, if God took away Job’s wealth and health, Satan argued, Job would curse God and die. Job proved Satan wrong. Job’s friends believed all suffering was due to sin. They did not understand what was happening to Job, and yet found fault with him.

The book teaches us that
(i) there is such a thing as innocent suffering (Job 42:7),
(ii) we may not always get answers to all our questions. Job never did, instead, he came to know more about God’s greatness (Chapters 38-42).
(iii) we may not get to the root of suffering. However, we can be sure that God is fully in control of our lives, and He will work out all things for our good (Romans 8:28).

Scripture Union Daily Guide 19th August 2025 Outline

There is something very important we must bear in mind when we read the Book of Job. One of the most popular books we had at school was a Maths book which had the answers at the back. It made our work a lot easier! The Book of Job is even better. It has the answer in the front! Once we read chapters 1 and 2, we know the answer to all the questions Job was asking in the next 36 chapters. However, Job never read the first two chapters – not even at the end of his life! That is what made Job’s suffering even harder.

Some facts worthy of note in this first chapter.
1. God knew Job’s heart, but Satan did not. He thought Job’s godliness depended on the possessions God gave him (Job 1:9-11).
2 Even before the tests began, God knew that Job would not fail, but Satan did not know (Job 1:8).
3. Satan wanted to destroy Job entirely; but God sets the boundaries (Job 1:12; Compare 1 Corinthians 10:13)
4. When tragedy struck, Job’s true faith came out for all to see (Job 1:20-22).
